How to write a résumé in Word

Recruiters scan a résumé in seconds. The key is not the design but making the important parts easy to see. Here is a structure that works and a template to start.

Start with the template

  1. Open TS Docs.
  2. In Templates… choose Résumé.
  3. Replace the sample text with your details.
  4. Save it as .docx for future edits and as PDF to send.

Recommended structure

  1. Name and contact: city, phone, email and LinkedIn. No need for your full address.
  2. Summary: 2–3 lines about your specialty and value.
  3. Experience: most recent first; role, company, dates and 2–4 achievements.
  4. Education: degree, school and years.
  5. Skills: tools, languages and certifications.

Write achievements, not duties

Mistakes that get you rejected

  • Typos.
  • More than two pages with little experience.
  • An unprofessional email address.
  • A casual photo (in the US, leave the photo out).
  • Sending .docx when PDF was requested, or vice versa.

Tip: tailor your summary and achievements to each job using keywords from the posting. Many companies use applicant tracking systems.
