How to open a Word (.docx) file without Office

Opening a Word document should not require a subscription. Here is how to open it in seconds, edit it if needed and save it again as Word or PDF.

If you only need to read it

  1. Open the document viewer.
  2. Drop the .docx file.
  3. You will see it page by page with its formatting: headings, tables, images and page breaks. You can print it or save it as PDF.

If you need to edit it

  1. Open TS Docs and click Open.
  2. Pick your .docx. Text, headings, lists, tables, images and links are loaded.
  3. Make your changes with the formatting bar.
  4. Click Save .docx or PDF.

What to expect when editing: content is recovered, but custom margins, headers and footers, comments and tracked changes are not. To review a contract with tracked changes, use Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.
