How to make an effective presentation

Presentations fail because of too much text and no structure, not because of missing effects. This guide gives you a simple structure and design rules that work for classes, sales or meetings.

A 5-part structure

  1. Title slide: a clear title and who is presenting.
  2. The problem or question: why the topic matters.
  3. 3 main ideas: one section per idea, with data or examples.
  4. Conclusion: what the audience should remember or do.
  5. Close: questions and contact.

Design rules

  • One idea per slide.
  • Six lines max with short phrases; details go in the speaker notes.
  • Large type: 28 pt or more for body text, 40 pt or more for titles.
  • Contrast: dark text on a light background or the reverse.
  • Images instead of paragraphs whenever possible.
  • Consistency: one color theme and typeface.

Build it in TS Slides

  1. Open TS Slides and pick a theme.
  2. Add slides with + Slide: Title, Title and content, Two columns or Section.
  3. Write what you will say in the speaker notes.
  4. Rehearse with Present (F5).
  5. Download it as .pptx or PDF.

When presenting

  • Rehearse out loud at least twice and time yourself.
  • Plan about 1 to 2 minutes per slide.
  • Do not read the slide: people read faster than you speak.
  • Bring a PDF copy in case the computer fails.
